For one day in Xalapa, combine a walk through the historic centre with the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa and an afternoon in Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl. The museum gives you a close look at archaeological collections, while the park offers outdoor time at the city’s highest point.

  • Start: Xalapa’s central historic attractions, including Parque Juárez and Barrio de Xallitic.
  • Museum: Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; closed Monday.
  • Park: Admission is free; hours are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except on non-working days.
Morning in central Xalapa

Morning in central Xalapa

Central Xalapa brings historic buildings, a cathedral, a traditional neighbourhood and a city park together for a city walk. Attractions include Palacio de Gobierno, Catedral Metropolitana, Barrio de Xallitic, Callejón del Diamante and Parque Juárez.

Once you reach the centre, choose a few of the sights for a relaxed first stretch rather than trying to cover them all before the museum.

Parque Juárez provides a natural pause in the city-centre walk. From there, continue through the central streets towards the museum, leaving time to arrive during its visiting hours.

Late morning at the Museo de Antropología

Late morning at the Museo de Antropología

The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa is home to archaeological collections associated with the Olmec, central Veracruz and Huastec cultures.

Founded on October 29, 1986, the museum is at Av. Xalapa s/n, Col. Magisterial. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and closed on Monday.

General admission is MXN 70; admission for students, teachers and INAPAM cardholders is MXN 30. The museum has an on-site cafeteria, restrooms, coat check, wheelchair access and wheelchairs. For a closer look at the collections and visiting details, use this guide to the Museo de Antropología de Xalapa.

Allow the museum visit to take the main part of your late morning, then pause for lunch before heading uphill to the park.

Spanish-language guided visits outside regular hours cost MXN 350 for groups of 1–20, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. English-language guided visits outside regular hours cost MXN 700 for groups of 1–20, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Lunch and a market or café stop

Lunch and a market or café stop

Use the middle of the day for lunch before the park visit. The museum’s cafeteria provides an on-site option; otherwise, include Mercado Jáuregui as a market stop and set off for Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl with enough time before its closing hour.

Afternoon at Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl

Afternoon at Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl

Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl is an outdoor afternoon stop at nearly 1,600 metres above sea level and the highest point in the city.

The park entrance is at Calle Tepic, corner of Aguascalientes, and admission to the park is free. It is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except on non-working days.

Use the afternoon for time on the park paths and, if it is open, the Museo Comunitario de la Fauna, another visitor attraction within the park. The fauna museum has an admission fee; check before making it part of your plan. For park trails and visiting details, see this guide to Parque Ecológico Macuiltépetl.

How to adjust the route for opening days

Build the itinerary around the museum’s Tuesday-to-Sunday schedule, since it is closed on Monday.

On a Monday, keep the day to the central-city walk and park, which is open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. except on non-working days. On other days, visit the museum late in the morning and leave the afternoon for Macuiltépetl. If the fauna museum is a priority, confirm its opening and admission details separately before setting out.

Admission prices and operating hours can change, so check the official site before you go. For the museum, you can also call 228 815 09 20, 228 815 49 52 or 228 815 07 08.

Transport and timing notes

The Museo de Antropología de Xalapa is about 8 minutes by car from Hotel Palacio. Allow room in your day for the connections between stops.

If you prefer to limit walking, use a car for the museum and park legs and keep the central section as a separate stroll. The park’s location at the city’s highest point makes it a distinct final stop rather than an extension of the city-centre walk.
